Sudden infant death due to accidental asphyxia from overlaying is a contentious issue complicated by a lack of useful autopsy markers. A case is presented of proposed overlaying in a 4-week-old boy to demonstrate problems that occur inestablishing the diagnosis. The value of death scene examination is stressed and the importance of establishing as accurate as possible a determination of the cause and manner of death is emphasized. Given the significant consequences to both individual parents, families, and communities of "non=SIDS" diagnosis, this is particularly important.-
