Abstract: | The article presents the æsthetic view of politics as basis for ethical and moral appraisal, as well as the cognitive processes and perceptual capacities of recognition. It states that recognition accords legal status and engages a personal obligation to perform a public duty. Moreover, it notes that there has been a surprising reorientation of political recognition in Africa, Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union over the past 20 years. However, it recognizes that there have been depressing examples of non-recognition in the Middle East and several countries in Africa. To strengthen the argument for humane respect and human rights in the multicultural state, the article mentions the views of several liberal theorists. |
