Abstract: Chinese brush-and-ink painting is a scholarly art that connects the creator to a collective past through the study and emulation of historical examples, and to the present through the gift, exchange or sale of artworks. By focusing attention on the calligraphic dedications on paintings, it is possible to reconstruct something of the social life of the art work, including intangible bonds of friendship, intellectual affinity, affection and community.
